2012-02-14 A workshop on developing intelligent user interfaces for e-accessibility will take place on 14 February 2012 in Lisbon, Portugal.
Modern research in intelligent interactive systems can offer valuable assistance to elderly and disabled populations by helping them to engage more fully with the world. However, many users find it difficult to use existing interaction devices either for physical or aging-related impairments, though researches on intelligent voice recognition, adaptable pointing, browsing and navigation, affect and gesture recognition can hugely benefit them.
This workshop will take a broad approach in looking at how to improve the quality of interaction experience for a wide range of users. It will explore the applicability of different modalities of interaction and investigate ways to develop intelligent adaptation systems that meet accessibility criteria and can personalise interfaces according to the range of abilities of the user. A particular focus will be given on interoperability.
The event programme will feature a session on demonstrating state of the art multimodal interaction techniques like free hand and gyroscopic remote-based gesture recognition system, single switch scanning, speech based system and simulation of user interaction patterns.

2012-02-13 An event entitled 'How new science is transforming the optical microscope' will take place on 13 February 2012 in London, UK.
Historically, lenses for optical microscopes have necessarily been small, but also having to capture light from the object over as wide an angle as possible to record fine detail. In recent times, though, lasers, computers and chemically-specific labels have produced significant developments.
The conference will highlight a new method which shows anatomy at the scale of millimetres and subcellular detail in the same image of a specimen such as a mouse embryo. The event will also bring together experts and researchers that share a common interest in the latest in optical microscope technology.

2012-02-09 The Eighth Italian Research Conference on Digital Libraries will take place from 9 to 10 February 2012 in Bari, Italy.
A digital library is a library in which collections are stored in digital formats and may be accessed either locally or remotely. This type of library has a variety of uses. For example, academic entities may make institutional books, papers, theses, and other works available to a wide audience with few restrictions. Archives may often make significant use of digital library methods and technologies.
Digital library systems are becoming increasingly mature and widely deployed. They not only have to give users effective and personalised access to information, but also now need to include legacy and cultural heritage documents. This calls for the ability to deal with compound objects in different media, and provide uniform solutions and methodologies across different cultural heritage institutions, while taking into account preservation, restoration and curation concerns.

2012-02-09 An event entitled 'The development of European identities: policy and research issues' will take place on 9 February 2012 in Brussels, Belgium.
National identity defines identity and sense of belonging to one state or to one nation. It can also mean a feeling that one shares with a group of people, regardless of citizenship status. Studies have shown that a person's national identity is a direct result of the presence of elements from the 'common points' in people's daily lives: national symbols, language, national colors, the nation's history, national consciousness, blood ties, culture, music, cuisine, radio, television, etc.
The event will feature a number of issues such as the evolution of a European identity in terms the creation of new distinct identity or identities, especially in the current state of financial, economic and social crisis. It will also focus on EU-funded research projects in the field of European identity and identities.

2012-02-09 An event entitled 'Towards a global initiative on gene-environment interactions in diabetes/obesity in specific populations' will take place from 9 to 10 February 2012 in Brussels, Belgium.
Diabetes causes severe health complications and is the fifth leading cause of death worldwide. The number of persons suffering from the type 2 form of the disease is set to rise to some 900 million globally by 2030. To counter this, increasing attention is being given to research into the environmental and genetic risk factors for diabetes and obesity in specific populations.
Under the Seventh Research Framework Programme, the European Union supports a series of scientific projects seeking to better understand and combat type-2 diabetes. Each project focuses on a different region of the world. The conference will take this global approach further by presenting the state-of-play and exploring opportunities for even greater international cooperation and new partnerships.
